Healthy desserts (and other eats) in Perth
After spending another week up in Perth for work, I was planning on putting together a little guide on what and where I ate. But for some reason (not at all because I have a sweet tooth), my food photos consisted mainly of desserts.
I was pleasantly surprised at the incredible range of healthier desserts on offer. On entering various health conscious cafes (thanks to the expert tips from Perth local @tanyaleebrown), I was instantly drawn to the epic dessert cabinets that seemed to reside in almost every one. I even found some amazing options at a local IGA supermarket. Well played, Perth.
Most of the desserts that I tried would fall into the 'healthier' category because they're made with whole food ingredients rather than refined sugars and flours. However, I'm the first to admit that these sorts of desserts shouldn't be overdone just because they're 'healthy'. They're just a nice alternative to a standard sugary dessert that can leave you with a sugar hangover. Plus I personally find them more filling and satisfying due to the inclusion of good fats like nuts, seeds and coconut.
My top picks:
Pearth Organic Kitchen - Organic cafe serving breakfast and lunch. Plenty of gluten-free, vegetarian and vegan options with a good selection of house-made desserts. I had the sweet potato brownie and went back for the raw snickers slice the next day. The sweet potato fries with cashew mayo were also some of the best I've had.
Nood Wholefoods - Super healthy options designed to take away, but there are a few seats inside and out the front. I had a roast vegetable and chicken salad and also tried the paleo vegetable and almond bread with avocado pesto, which was so tasty. They also offer smoothie bowls, raw desserts and bulletproof coffee.
Pixel Coffee Brewers - Nourishing bowls, classic eggs on locally-baked sourdough, grain or gluten-free toast, specialty coffee and an impressive range of organic loose leaf teas. Plus a dessert cabinet to die for. I had an Anzac Yo Yo with rosemary-infused buttercream which was next level. The rosemary worked surprisingly well!
Sweets on the go:
If you're after a sweet snack, I came across a few local companies creating some delicious options.
Rawsome - Decadent raw treats free from gluten, grains, dairy, eggs, soy and refined sugar. They're stocked at a range of stores in Western Australia - you can search for stockists here. They also hold a range of different workshops via Meetup.
The Sugarless Bakery - Their cakes, slices and cookies are made with nutrient dense ingredients like nuts, coconut, raw cacao and plant essences, using only small amounts of xylitol and stevia for a hint of sweetness. They're also low carb, gluten-free, dairy-free and delicious.
Rawgasm Tasty Treats - They supply a huge range of raw treats including raw chocolate, slices, fudge, brownies, cakes and bliss balls. I came across a little cafe called Tom's that stocked what seemed to be like the whole range (see picture below). Choices!
