This Vegan Apple Crumble is so easy to make. Just spiced green apples topped with a crunchy crumble topping that is gluten free and dairy free.

I like to use green apples in the recipe, but you can use any apples you like. To spice up the apples, I love to use ground cinnamon, a pinch of ground nutmeg and vanilla extract. Nutmeg is quite a strong spice so if you don’t like it you can leave it out and just stick with cinnamon and vanilla extract. Unlike some apple crumble recipes, I don’t add any sweetener to the apples and honestly don’t think they need it. The crumble topping is sweet and the apples get sweeter as their juices cook down in the oven.

Since this is a vegan recipe, coconut oil is used to make the crumble topping instead of butter. I also use two parts rolled oats to one part flour. Using oats adds some extra nutrients, whilst the flour is needed to get a crunchier crumble result. I use gluten free flour. This brand is the one I’m using at the moment, which you can buy at Coles in Australia. Or you could use regular plain flour if gluten doesn’t bother you.

Vegan gluten free apple crumble

Vegan Apple Crumble

Ingredients

For the filling:

  • 3 large green apples (or 4 small ones) (I used Granny Smith)
  • 1 x 20ml tablespoon arrowroot flour (or cornstarch)
  • Pinch of ground nutmeg (optional)
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

For the crumble topping:

  • 2 cups rolled oats
  • 1 cup gluten free plain flour
  • 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
  • Pinch of sea salt
  • 4 x 20ml tablespoons pure maple syrup
  • 4 x 20ml tablespoons coconut oil, melted

Method

  1. Preheat your oven to 170°C (fan-forced).
  2. Wash the apples well, then cut them into quarters and remove the core. Slice each quarter lengthways into thin slices (see video above).
  3. Place the apple slices into a bowl and add the remaining filling ingredients. Toss well so that the slices are evenly coated. Tip the slices into a 20cm x 20cm square cake tin or baking dish and spread them out into an even layer.
  4. To make the crumble topping, place the oats, flour, cinnamon and salt into a bowl and stir to combine. You can use the same bowl that you used for the apple slices. Add the maple syrup and melted coconut oil and mix until everything is well combined. Tip the crumble over the apple slices and use your hands to spread it out into an even layer.
  5. Bake in the preheated oven for 1 hour or until the apples are soft and the crumble topping is golden brown. You can test whether the apples are soft by inserting a knife into the centre of the crumble. Allow to cool for at least 10 minutes before serving so the apple juices have time to thicken slightly.

Notes:

Oats naturally don’t contain gluten, but as they are often processed on the same equipment as wheat, they can have traces of gluten. If you’re strictly gluten free, you can buy gluten free oats.
